Click-to-Call and Phone Conversions for Local Businesses
For plumbers, dentists, restaurants, and many service businesses, the phone is still the main way customers get in touch. On a mobile device, calling should take one tap. If your site makes people copy a number or hunt for it, you lose leads.
Make your number a tap-to-call link
A phone number written as plain text isn't always clickable on every device. Use a tel: link with the number in international format:
020 7946 0000
The visible text can use local formatting, while the link includes the country code, so it works from anywhere.
Put the number where it's needed
- In the header, visible on every page, especially on mobile. See how to design a website header
- Near the main call to action on service pages
- In the footer and on the contact page
- In a sticky call button on mobile, if it doesn't cover content or focus
- On confirmation pages and emails
See tradesperson website design essentials.
Use clear labels and hours
Say "Call us" or "Call now," and show when someone will answer. If you're closed, offer another option, such as a callback form. Nothing frustrates a caller more than an unanswered phone at 2 p.m. on a weekday you claimed to be open.
Make the button easy to tap
Use a large, high-contrast target. See touch target sizes and button design best practices.
Track the calls
Without tracking, you don't know whether the site produces calls. Options:
- Click tracking. Record taps on
tel:links as events. This measures intent, not whether the call connected. See how to set up conversion tracking - Call tracking numbers. Services provide numbers that forward to your line and record source, duration, and sometimes call recordings. If you use dynamic numbers that change by visitor source, keep a consistent main number in the page's static content, and make sure your business listings use your primary number. See NAP consistency
- Ask callers. A quick "How did you hear about us?" is easy and surprisingly informative.
If you record calls, tell callers, and follow the laws on call recording where you operate. Explain your use of data in your privacy policy. See privacy policy basics.
Answer the phone well
A great website can't fix a missed call. Consider:
- Answering quickly, or using a service or voicemail that returns calls fast
- Training anyone who answers to ask the right questions
- Following up on missed calls
- Having clear business hours in your Google Business Profile
Combine with other options
Some people prefer not to phone. Offer a short form, email, or chat as well. See contact form design and live chat and chatbots.
Support local search
Your number should match your Google Business Profile and directories. Calls from the profile are a major source of leads. See how to set up Google Business Profile and how to track local SEO results.
Don't forget desktop
Desktop visitors can't tap-to-call, but they may call from a phone while looking at the screen. Make the number large and easy to read.
The bottom line
Make your number tappable, visible, and tracked, and staff it. For phone-led businesses, those small details drive real revenue.
